What is Hash Generator?

Hash Generator is a free online tool that turns any text into four cryptographic fingerprints: SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512. A hash function takes input of any length and produces a fixed-length string of hexadecimal characters. Change even one character of the input and the output changes completely, while the same input always produces the same output. That one-way property makes hashes useful everywhere a short, reliable fingerprint is needed: checking that a downloaded file matches the value published by its author, generating a stable identifier for a piece of content, or comparing two texts without sharing the texts themselves.

All four hashes here are computed with the Web Crypto API built into your browser, and the input text is encoded as UTF-8 before hashing, so results match standard command-line and programming tools that use the same encoding. SHA-256 is the sensible default for most integrity checks today: it is widely supported, fast, and has no known practical collisions. SHA-384 and SHA-512 offer longer outputs for uses that demand a larger security margin, while SHA-1 is included only for compatibility with older systems that still publish SHA-1 values, since it is no longer considered safe for security-critical checks.

How to use Hash Generator

Type or paste your text into the input box and the four hashes update automatically as you type. There is no button to press for the calculation itself. Use "Copy SHA-256" to copy the most commonly needed value, or "Copy all hashes" to copy all four with labels. Click "Clear" to empty the input and reset the results.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no MD5 option?
The browser Web Crypto API does not offer MD5, and MD5 has long been broken for collision resistance, so it should not be used for integrity checks in new work. If an older system gives you an MD5 value, verify it with a local desktop tool; for anything new, use SHA-256.

Why does my hash differ from another tool's result?
Almost always the inputs differ in some invisible way: a trailing newline, a copied space, or a different character encoding. Make sure both sides hash exactly the same bytes, and remember this tool always uses UTF-8.

Can a hash be reversed to recover my text?
No. Hash functions are one-way by design: there is no practical way to reconstruct the original text from its hash. That is also why hashes are safe to share for comparison purposes.

Is my text sent to a server?
No. Hashing runs locally in your browser via Web Crypto, and your text never leaves your device.
